Rush Order Material FAQ: Covestro 2805 Polycarbonate, Recycled TPU, and the Questions I Actually Get

People assume a rush order is about speed. It isn't. Speed is the easy part.

I coordinate material supply at a plastics distributor. In the last four years, I've handled 200+ rush orders—maybe closer to 220 if you count the small ones, I'd have to check the system—including same-day turnarounds for automotive and medical clients. When someone calls with 36 hours left before a deadline, these are the questions that come up again and again. Plus one that doesn't come up often enough.

1. Is Covestro a reliable supplier?

First question on almost every call, and a fair one. Covestro is a Germany-based polymer manufacturer, spun off from Bayer in 2015. Their materials are specified into automotive, medical, electronics, and construction parts under names like Makrolon polycarbonate, Desmopan TPU, and Bayblend PC/ABS. When a part has been validated on Makrolon, the last thing anyone wants before a production deadline is an "equivalent" material from a source that can't put a certificate on the table.

That's what reliability means in this business: a consistent product and a consistent paper trail. We keep standard grades in stock for exactly that reason.

2. What is Covestro 2805 polycarbonate?

Makrolon 2805 is one of the most common injection molding grades of polycarbonate. It's a medium-viscosity grade with good mold release, which makes it a workhorse for thin-wall or complex parts—automotive interior pieces, appliance housings, electrical enclosures. When someone calls asking for "Covestro 2805," this is what they mean.

The data sheet numbers people quote are:

  • Vicat softening temperature (ISO 306, B120): around 145°C
  • Heat deflection temperature (ASTM D648, 1.8 MPa): roughly 125°C
  • Melt volume rate (ISO 1133, 300°C / 1.2 kg): about 9.5 cm³/10 min

I also get calls from buyers who have a cheaper source. I understand the appeal—based on publicly reported spot prices in early 2025, commodity polycarbonate has been trading in a wide range, and an off-market trader can undercut the standard grade by 5% or more. What I mean is that the savings is real until it isn't: I've seen "great deal" resin arrive with off-spec melt flow, and the production stoppage cost more than the entire order saved. In my four years handling rush orders, the lowest quote has ended up costing more often than it saved.

3. Does recycled TPU from Covestro actually perform?

This is the question I changed my mind on. When I first started, I assumed recycled TPU meant lower performance across the board—weaker tear strength, shorter flex life, inconsistent hardness. For some no-name recycled resins, sure. But the big material producers have been shipping recycled-content grades matched to specific applications.

Covestro's Desmopan line includes recycled-content grades we've supplied for casters, phone cases, tool grips, and shoe soles. In those applications, the parts pass the same tests as virgin material. The honest caveats: elongation at break is often a bit lower, and you have to check the technical data sheet rather than assume.

I had a customer who bought "recycled TPU" from an unverified broker to save on a caster order. The parts cracked in the field two months later, and the replacement program cost them more than fifteen grand. Not because the material was recycled—because nobody validated it. Same word on the label doesn't mean the same material underneath.

4. Is ABS sheet a good choice for a workbench surface?

For a workbench, yes. ABS sheet resists workshop chemicals, moisture, and scratches better than painted plywood, and it machines easily. People building lab benches, electronics workbenches, and machine guards use it for good reasons.

But the follow-up question is temperature. ABS starts to soften well below 100°C. If the bench is for soldering or anything with hot tools, use polycarbonate or a composite instead. If it's for general assembly with oils and cleaning solvents, ABS is a sensible, cost-effective choice.

And yes, "ABS bench" is a real search term—usually this exact scenario. A bench made from ABS sheet. Not a seat. In four years, I've had exactly one client who wanted a seat, and we pointed him to the furniture store.

5. How much heat can polycarbonate actually take?

Polycarbonate handles heat better than ABS and most commodity thermoplastics, but people overestimate it. Here are the real test values, the kind you'll find on any PC data sheet:

  • Glass transition temperature: ~147°C
  • HDT at 1.8 MPa (ASTM D648): ~125°C for Makrolon 2805
  • Vicat softening temperature (ISO 306, B120): ~145°C
  • Continuous service temperature: ~120–130°C when unloaded

The trap is reading the Vicat number and treating it as a working temperature. That 145°C is a softening point measured with a needle pressing on the surface—not a long-term service rating. I've had more than one conversation with a customer whose part sits near a motor, and the answer always comes back to one question: what's the load, and how long is the exposure?

Polycarbonate is a genuinely capable material. It also creeps under sustained load and temperature, like any thermoplastic. The data sheet tells you where the limits are; it doesn't tell you which number applies to your design.

6. What's your backup plan if something goes wrong?

Here's the question nobody asks on a first rush order—and the one that separates smooth emergency jobs from expensive ones.

A medical device customer called on a Monday and asked, "If this lot fails incoming inspection, what's the alternative?" Their quality manager seemed paranoid that day. Then the certificate arrived with the wrong batch number on it—material fine, paperwork wrong. Because they'd pushed the risk conversation in advance, we had a qualified backup lot ready, and the line never stopped.

I've been caught too. In 2023, I skipped double-checking a lot number because the truck was waiting and we'd shipped that same grade thirty times. What are the odds? They caught up with me: the customer's QC flagged the paperwork, the line stopped for two hours, and we covered the $400 freight charge. Now I check the certificate before the truck leaves, not after.

On an urgent order, ask about alternate lot availability, pre-certified stock, and what happens if the first attempt isn't right. If the supplier gets annoyed by the question, that's the most useful answer you'll get.

7. What's the best foam board for cutting plywood?

Not the question you expected from a plastics supplier, but it's the same principle as everything above: protect the material under pressure.

When you cut plywood—or a polycarbonate or ABS sheet—the bottom surface takes the damage. Tearout, scratches, vibration marks. The fix is a rigid foam board underneath. I keep a 15mm sheet of XPS foam insulation on the cutting table. It supports the full panel, doesn't dull the blade, and costs a few dollars to replace when it gets chewed up. Route through it, score on it, cut on it.

For plastic sheets specifically, sandwich the material between two foam boards: top board stops vibration, bottom board keeps the finish clean. It's a $20 trick that prevents a $2,000 ruined sheet. Which is the whole point of planning a rush order: pay a little attention up front so you don't pay a lot later.
