Polypropylene vs Polyethylene Sheets: A Procurement-Focused Comparison (and the Plastic vs Nylon Question)

I manage purchasing for a 150-person company. That means I handle material orders for about $100,000 annually, split across roughly eight vendors, and I report to both operations and finance. I am not a materials engineer. But when someone asks me to buy polypropylene sheets, polyethylene sheets, or a TPU phone case from Covestro as a client gift, I have to know the difference. Why Compare Polypropylene and Polyethylene at All?

1. Flexibility and Stiffness

Polyethylene sheets are softer and more flexible. They take repeated bending at low temperatures without cracking, which makes them my default for freezer flaps, curved liners, and anything that needs to absorb impact. Polypropylene sheets are stiffer. They hold their shape better and have better 'hinge memory' if you need a folding panel or a sign that won't buckle.

The surprise wasn't which was stronger—it was how much it mattered in practice. I ordered PE for a storage bin liner because it was 'tougher' in my head. The liner moved and drooped. Put another way: PE shrugs off impact, but it doesn't hold a corner. PP holds a corner, but if you really hit it, it can shatter. 2. Chemical Resistance

Both materials resist water and most chemicals better than a lot of metal parts I've seen. 3. Heat Tolerance

PP wins in heat. It handles hot water washdowns and steam exposure better than PE. The data sheets I've used show PP's heat deflection is higher by a wide margin, but the exact number depends on the grade. PE's low-temperature performance is the flip side—it stays flexible in a freezer or cold warehouse when PP might become brittle.

I have mixed feelings about specialty grades here. On one hand, a high-temperature PP sheet costs more. On the other, replacing it early costs even more. I usually ask: How hot does it really get? And how often? If it's not daily heat, standard grade is fine.

4. Cost, but Not the Way You Expect

I assumed polyethylene would always be cheaper because it felt like the 'default' plastic. In one 2024 quote, PE was about 8% cheaper per sheet at the same thickness. But PP is stiffer, so our application could use a thinner sheet and still pass the stress test. The total order cost was almost identical. The larger cost was the rework from ordering the wrong material.

That's the lesson I keep re-learning: the quoted price is rarely the final price. If a sheet fails, you pay for labor, shipping, downtime, and the look on your manager's face. I now get one sample sheet before any bulk order. It costs a little, and it has saved me from at least two bad purchases (note to self: I really should write down those sample requests for the audit).

The Plastic vs Nylon Question

At some point, someone will say, 'this cheap plastic is the problem' and you end up in the plastic vs nylon discussion. Nylon is not just 'strong plastic.' It's a polyamide—stiffer, stronger, more abrasion resistant, and better in high-wear applications. It also costs more and absorbs moisture, so it isn't the automatic answer either.

  • If the part rubs, slides, or carries load—like a wear strip or gear—nylon is worth the money.
  • If it's a barrier, liner, splash shield, or sign—polypropylene sheets or polyethylene sheets are probably enough.
  • If you're choosing between these two sheets: choose PE for flexibility and impact at low temperatures, choose PP for stiffness, heat, and better solvent resistance.

A supplier who says, 'this isn't our strength—here's who does it better' earns my trust for everything else. That's the same reason I don't promise a universal plastic for every job. Specialization feels more honest, and in my job, honest suppliers get the next order.

Why Brand and Grade Matter: A Covestro Example

So Which One Should You Order?

If you need a sheet that can flex, take hits, and survive a freezer, start with polyethylene sheets. If you need something stiff, heat-resistant, and chemical-resistant, go with polypropylene sheets. If the application includes friction or mechanical load, have the nylon conversation before you commit. And if a spec names a specific material or brand—like a TPU phone case from Covestro—don't substitute without checking.
