How to Choose Between Covestro and BASF Polycarbonates: A Practical Guide

One pattern I see again and again: people get stuck comparing material suppliers at the spec-sheet level, and they miss the bigger picture — which is that material selection is a trade-off. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. So here's a five-step checklist I use when choosing between Covestro and BASF polycarbonates. It's designed to be practical, not theoretical. When to Use This Checklist

This checklist is for engineers, procurement specialists, and product designers who are actively comparing polycarbonate suppliers — specifically Covestro and BASF — and need a structured way to evaluate them. It's useful when:

  • You're sourcing for a new product and need to pick a primary supplier
  • You're considering switching from one supplier to the other
  • You're under a tight deadline and need to make a decision quickly

From the outside, it looks like you just compare spec sheets and pick the cheaper one. The reality is that identical specs from different suppliers can result in wildly different outcomes in production. So let's get into it.

There are six steps total. Follow them in order, and you'll have a clear decision at the end.

Step 1: Check the Specs That Matter

First, the obvious stuff. You're going to look at the mechanical and thermal specs. But I've found that most people overlook one thing: the processing window.

Covestro's Makrolon® line and BASF's Ultramid® (their polycarbonate grade) both offer excellent impact resistance and clarity. But the processing temperature ranges can differ by 10-15°C between specific grades. That difference matters if your molding equipment is running near its limit.

What to check:

  • Melt flow index (MFI) — make sure you're comparing apples to apples
  • Impact strength (Izod or Charpy) — especially if the part will see impacts
  • Heat deflection temperature (HDT) — critical for automotive or electronics applications
  • Processing temperature range — this is the one people miss

Step 2: Evaluate Environmental Resistance

This is where the differences get real. Covestro has invested heavily in hydrolysis-resistant polycarbonate grades — that's a key differentiator for them, especially if the material will see moisture. BASF has similar offerings in their Ultramid® line (which is a polyamide, not a polycarbonate, but they do have PC/ABS blends that compete).

For polycarbonate specifically, Covestro's Makrolon® line includes hydrolysis-stabilized grades that perform well in humid environments. BASF's polycarbonate grades are solid, but they don't have the same breadth of specialized grades for moisture resistance.

The question to ask: Is your application going to be exposed to water, humidity, or steam? If yes, pay close attention to the hydrolysis data. Covestro publishes their test results for immersion in water at 90°C. BASF does too, but the data sets aren't always directly comparable.

Step 3: Compare Sustainability Credentials — Honestly

This is the step where a lot of people get seduced by marketing language. Here's my honest take:

Both Covestro and BASF are investing heavily in sustainability. Covestro has their CO2-based polycarbonate (using CO2 as a raw material) and their recycled TPU and bio-based TPU lines. BASF has their ChemCycling® project and various biomass-balanced products.

The reality: for polycarbonate specifically, Covestro's Makrolon® RE series (post-consumer recycled) has been on the market longer and has more documented supply chain. BASF's offerings are catching up, but as of early 2025, Covestro has a wider portfolio of certified recycled polycarbonate grades.

But — and this is important — don't pick a supplier based on sustainability claims alone if the material doesn't perform. I've seen companies switch to a recycled grade and then have to revert because the impact strength dropped 15%. Always test the material in your actual application before committing to a sustainability-driven switch.

Step 4: Check Availability and Lead Times

This is the step that procurement people know but engineers often overlook. Covestro and BASF both have global supply chains, but their distribution networks differ by region.

In my experience (based on coordinating about 200 orders over the last three years):

  • Covestro has stronger distribution in North America for their polycarbonate line
  • BASF has a broader portfolio for engineering plastics in Europe and Asia
  • For standard grades, both usually have stock available within 2-3 weeks
  • For specialty grades (hydrolysis-resistant, high-flow), Covestro tends to have shorter lead times — around 4-6 weeks vs BASF's 6-8 weeks in some regions

Step 5: Test a Sample (Seriously)

This is the step most people skip. They compare spec sheets, think it's obvious, and order full production quantities. Then they discover that one brand's material shrinks differently, or warps more, or doesn't bond as well with their adhesive.

Both Covestro and BASF offer sample quantities for qualified buyers. Order samples from both. Run them through your actual production process — not just a lab test. If you're working with a distributor, ask them to coordinate a sample order with the manufacturer.

What to test:

  • Same part geometry on your existing molds
  • Processing parameters (melt temp, mold temp, injection speed)
  • Post-processing (painting, bonding, welding)
  • Environmental stress crack resistance (ESCR) — especially if the part will see chemicals

It's tempting to think you can skip this step if the specs look identical. But identical specs from different suppliers can result in different warpage, different cycle times, and different scrap rates. I've seen a 5% difference in scrap rate between two suppliers for the same part — that's $10,000+ per year in lost material.

Step 6: Make the Call

After you've gone through steps 1-5, you should have a clear picture. Here's my general rule of thumb:

  • Choose Covestro if: You need hydrolysis resistance, have specific sustainability requirements (recycled content), or need faster lead times for specialty grades
  • Choose BASF if: You value the broader portfolio for multi-material projects, need chemical resistance (their Ultramid® grades excel here), or prefer their approach to biomass-balanced products

But honestly, for standard polycarbonate applications, either will work. The real decision comes down to availability, lead time, and the specific grade you need.

Common Pitfalls (And How to Avoid Them)

1. Assuming "standard" means the same thing. It doesn't. What one vendor calls "standard clear polycarbonate" might have UV protection or a specific release agent. Always get the full technical data sheet.

2. Forgetting about moisture. Polycarbonate is hygroscopic. It absorbs moisture from the air. That moisture can cause splay (surface defects) during injection molding if the material isn't dried properly. Both Covestro and BASF provide drying guidelines — follow them.

3. Not factoring in color matching. If you need a specific color, especially a corporate color, make sure both suppliers can match it. Covestro and BASF both offer color compounding services, but lead times and minimum order quantities vary. Industry standard color tolerance is Delta E < 2 for brand-critical colors.

4. Getting lost in the marketing. Both companies have great marketing teams. Don't choose based on which brochure looks more impressive. Choose based on which material actually works in your application and your supply chain.

In my opinion, the extra effort of testing samples and checking actual availability is worth it. If you make the wrong choice, you could lose thousands of dollars in scrap or delayed production. If you make the right choice, you save time, money, and headaches.
