- Choose Teijin if: You have a highly specialized application—like a specific flame-retardant or high-heat grade that Teijin has a niche advantage in. Or if you're working on a project where their relationship with a specific OEM gives you better support. Their Panlite® grades for automotive lighting are well-regarded, for instance.
But honestly? For a typical medical device project, I'd probably start with Covestro, run a comparable grade from Teijin in parallel, and make the call based on documentation quality and price. The performance is close enough that the decision often comes down to logistics and support.
Final Thought: The Industry Is Changing
What was best practice in 2020—relying on a single supplier for specialization—may not apply in 2025. Both Covestro and Teijin are evolving their portfolios, responding to demand for more sustainable materials, and investing in documentation. The fundamentals of material selection haven't changed, but the execution—especially around verifiable sustainability claims—has transformed.
